Chapter 13- Floodgates Opened

ISOBEL

"And here's the couple we've been waiting to see all night, Tim."

"Yes, Rachel, and they don't disappoint, do they? Lucas looks incredible as usual and has gone with the casual formal look in a black suit and white shirt, but no tie. What do we think of that?"

"It's a brilliant move, we've seen so many of the footballers getting it wrong tonight. Their ties have been either too big or too small, some were even in crazy patterns which is just inappropriate for this kind of event. The Coastal Crocs forward has successfully avoided that pitfall. And what about Isobel? She looks stunning."

"I'm really pleased with the approach she's taken, Rachel. I was worried she'd be tempted to force herself into something that didn't suit her to try and fit in with the fashionistas here, but she's really walked her own path."

"And I'd say it's paid off, Tim. I love that dress, royal blue with black lace along the neckline and breaking up the full skirt. It's unique and the off the shoulder look really works for her with her small waist and shoulders. I think I would have preferred to see her with her hair down, however, it's quite a formal dress and I think she could have loosened it up a bit by going a bit more casual with her hairstyle."

"I agree, but Rachel, we've got to remember it's her first event like this, she'll work these things out in time. There are good signs here that she could have the red carpet firmly under her control before too long."

I gripped Lucas's hand tightly and tried not to be too obviously listening to the entertainment news people commentating on me. Nobody had said anything too bad yet, but it was one of the most disconcerting things in the world to listen to someone talking so boldly about you in front of you. There was a marked increase in the screaming as Lucas turned to smile at the fans while I worked hard on simply putting one high heel clad foot in front of the other. Imagine if I fell now…?

"When you have the red carpet under your control, can you introduce a rule stating that chicks have to wear shoes they can actually walk in?" Lucas murmured, his arm tightening around me as I stumbled imperceptibly.

"It would be my pleasure," I whispered back, internally kicking myself for not insisting on a shoe change when I'd forced Maureen to help me into the blue dress.

"Still," he leant down closer so I could hear him over all the noise from the fans, "it's got to be good knowing that, even if you did face-plant it, you'd still look classier than everyone else here put together."

He turned away then to shake the hand of another football player so I don't think he noticed that, after processing his compliment, I just about collapsed into a billowing heap of royal blue fabric at his feet.

I was still struggling to pull myself back together when I heard a familiar voice call my name.
